Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Roy Halladay by David E. WilkinsonJust wanted to share a blurb about my latest image of Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay. In just one amazing year as a Phillie, Roy Halladay has cemented himself as not only one of the greatest pitchers in the Philadelphia Phillies’ long history but maybe one of the greatest athletes in Philadelphia’s sports history. In his first year with the team, he pitched just the second perfect game in the team’s history. As is that wasn’t enough, for an encore, he added a second no hitter in the 2010 playoffs.

With all the other commercial work I have been doing recently on brands such as Thomas & Friends, I have not had much time to create many new sports images. So I knew I wanted to pick someone who was somewhat current and meaningful. It is baseball season after all and with Roy being not only the best pitcher in the city of Philadelphia but in all of Major League Baseball, the choice was very easy.

As always, I tired to create an image that captures the excitement and essence of the athlete bringing it to life in my own original style. It is a shame, too often these days you see so called “sports artists” coming out of the woodwork not only depicting mundane images but using the computer solely as a crutch adding little to no creativity to the work. It really is a shame because the whole point is lost when the artist adds nothing of himself to the creative process and seems to be more concerned with putting quantity over quality.Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Roy Halladay by David E. A computer should be nothing more than another tool for the artist in his creative arsenal. When you use it solely as a means to an end and in the end your images look like nothing more than filtered or auto traced images, I have to ponder what’s the point? It gets even worse when these so called “artists” then sacrifice what should be their own creative expression with someone else’s by ripping off their style and originality. I take great pride in what I do and try my best to not only create something original, but put as much of me into each and every piece I create as possible. Art is and always should be a expression of self, not someone else. I believe every “artist” should have the same approach. If you don’t I have to ask again, what’s the point?

Please feel free to drop me a comment and let me know what you think. I always enjoy hearing feedback and reaction to my work for without someone to appreciate it, what is art really for?
